Become a Volunteer

Make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of people each year!

Become part of a growing, committed group of volunteers at the Brandywine Zoo. We invite you to explore the Zoo's volunteer opportunities and docent program. The Brandywine Zoo depends on people like you for support of its commitment to providing excellent care for our animals, a great experience for visitors and a better future for all living things.

Benefits include: continuing education opportunities, training, field trips, making new friends and helping animals and our environment through education.

How Do I Become a Volunteer?
The Brandywine Zoo is part of Delaware State Parks. As a member of Delaware State Parks, all volunteers for the Brandywine Zoo must first apply through DE State Parks office of Volunteerism. All of our volunteer recruitment and screening is conducted by Delaware State Parks, who completes volunteer interviews and background checks prior to forwarding any information about volunteers who meet the minimum requirements to volunteer to the Zoo.

Steps to becoming a volunteer at the Zoo:
  1. Optional: Attend a volunteer open house. See below for dates or visit our calendar of events.
  2. Complete the DE State Parks online Volunteer Application. Be sure to select the positions at the Zoo that interest you when completing this application. a. Volunteer group leaders should complete this form, too.
  3. Pass a background check administered by DE State Parks.
  4. Meet and interview with the Zoo's Volunteer Coordinator and/or Education Department staff (can be done at open house).
      a. Approved volunteers will be then invited to attend new volunteer orientation.

Please do not contact the Education Department directly about the status of your application, as this falls under the Delaware State Parks office of Volunteerism and Zoo staff do not have access to their records directly.
