Our miracle IVF daughter Celebrating 25 Years of ‘BEElieving’ in Reproductive Associates of Delaware at Brandywine Zoo - 2019

We BEElieved

We were able to participate in the Reproductive Associates of Delaware 25th Anniversary party held at Brandywine Zoo in 2019. Our eldest daughter was a RAD IVF baby, and we ‘BEElieved’ in RAD and they helped us bring her into the world! Celebrating with all of the other babies and families at Brandywine Zoo was extra special!

Red Panda Connection

My daughter and I first visited the zoo when she was one and a half. She loved the red pandas and after a long deliberation, chose a small stuffy red panda to take home. He soon became her favorite and travelled with us to beaches, mountains, doctor and dentist visits, and many school days. With each visit, we add to the his family, and as Red Panda’s pack grows, so does ours!

The Joy of Strolling

I have had great experiences just strolling through the zoo and seeing the animals. I really enjoyed the lemur and red panda encounter.

Little Nature Explorer

My son Ryker started attending Little nature, explorer classes starting at the age of two years old. I was looking for a place where Ryker could feel accepted and connected, as he was recently diagnosed with Autism. Ryker loves animals, so I thought the zoo would be the perfect place. The Brandywine zoo is welcoming and gives off positive energy. The staff and atmosphere allowed Ryker a safe space to grow and to be himself. Ryker initially started class by doing his own thing, paying attention on the outskirts, but loving more of the movement atmosphere. The staff was always accommodating and encouraging. Ryker was nonverbal at the time, but that never deterred any of the zoo staff to engage with him and to form connections. As a parent, also new to supporting Ryker in ways that he needed, I felt very comfortable being at the zoo, in class, and talking with the staff about any of Ryker‘s needs. The staff genuinely cared and also started to use sign language and certain cues to assist Ryker in knowing about transitions. As time passed, and we continued to attend class, Ryker’s engagement increased. He was curious about the other kids, curious about the animals, and loved reading the stories. He would often like to explore the zoo which he was able to do following class. On the other hand, not all classes went smooth or were pretty. The staff was more than helpful with continuing to encourage Ryker while I also brought items that were motivating and rewarding for him. This seemed to help as behaviors decreased, and his engagement with others started to thrive. Ryker started making eye contact and waving to other kids and staff. Ryker was able to say his name when introducing himself. He was able to use his communication device to share his favorite animal. Ryker was walking up to the zoo proudly, getting his name tag, and guiding me to the area to where class was held. Ryker has been consistent with Little Nature explorers until the age of five, rain or shine this was a part of our week. This continued to expand to attending the zoo outside of class, attending zoo events, and sharing his experience with class to others. little nature explorers also expanded into his school which only added to his excitement since he was familiar with the program. He was so excited to share his zoo class moments with me at pick up time. Ryker attended his first camp at the Brandywine zoo this past summer, and it was amazing! The staff continues to be so communicative and encouraging. Most know Ryker by name and go out of their way to share a positive interaction with him. Ryker loved every minute of camp! I also had no worries or concerns dropping him off each morning. Ryker is now talking, something I was told that he would never do. I truly believe that the Brandywine zoo, the Little nature Explorer class, and the zoo staff played a major role in his progress. The way that they invited him in, without judgment, showed him love, compassion and encouragement, is something that I will always be grateful for. This is something that was not an expectation of their position but something that comes natural to the entire team and it is clear as soon as one walks into the gates.

A place to find yourself and be yourself
Fun times at the Zoo!

Special Place in Our Hearts

We have been visiting the Brandywine Zoo since the early 1980’s when I was kid. We frequently would visit after attending church on Sunday’s and walk around checking out all the animals before heading over to the Monkey house. We would also make a day of it with friends of the family on nice days in the summer and have a picnic lunch by the Brandywine before entering the zoo. Flash forward to my adult hood we would go up every now and then on a nice day. Once we had kids we became members again and we would frequently bring the kids up to share in the traditions that I had when I was their age. Our visits became our weekend routine in the summer and our boys and later on our daughter would always ask can we go to the zoo today? The Brandywine zoo will hold a special place in our hearts for the traditions and memories that we have experienced! Thank you!

Grandmother’s Joy

Growing up in Newark, the Brandywine Zoo was always a staple in my life. As I got older, it was one of the few places that I could take my grandmother, who has dementia, for a fun, stress-free day to do something she loves – be around animals. On this particular day in 2018, it was raining, but we were still having a great time watching the ducks enjoy their pond. It will always be one of my fondest memories!

A Great Place to Visit

My family lives close by. And we take walks almost every day. I always end up at the zoo. I love visiting my animal pals. I love learning about the animals from your team of super friendly and very knowledgeable keepers. It’s a great place to visit!!

First time at Brandywine!

We’ll Be Back

I am an aspiring nurse who is doing a career change into Veterinary! I have a deep love for animals and just moved to DE from MD! I came to Brandywine Zoo for the first time and loved how they offered sensory hour for individuals with sensory disabilities! My boyfriend is autistic and even though we didn’t get to make it in time for sensory hour, we felt the animal exhibits were well spaced apart that we weren’t on top of other people! It was nap time for most animals but we still got to see them sleeping and it was a wonderful experience! We will be back!

Red Panda Experience

We came there for the first time recently to the ZOO and did behind the scenes with the red pandas. They are my daughter’s favorite animal! It was so much fun. The staff shared so much info on the red pandas. We would love to do it again!! We had so much fun!

Bring my grand babies there is always a fun thing we do. They love the zoo, seeing the lemurs and the other animals is always fun for them. We also have visited the zoo to see Santa.

I’m Back

I have recently returned to my home town of Wilmington, DE where I grew up in the Brandywine at the top of Monkey Hill!! For me The Zoo and River were my playground. I spent all my free time with a few friends in the Zoo or along the banks of The River using many of the big rocks to wander out into the water as possible. We were curious and do happy. Looking for minnows, catching minnows, skimming rocks after spending hours in the zoo with all our animal friends was the best. My Mom would take charge of Our Shortlidge School class trips and would be prepared either with appropriate stories about the different animals. My favorite was The Monkey House. I am now 67, have moved “home” to live in Rockford Park. I have purchased a Brandywine Zoo membership and will be there with my husband and Grandchildren. Wish I had an old picture from 1960’s to share!!

Tiger Scare

It has been many years since the zoo received a tiger from the Minnesota Zoo, but I remember the trip to the Philadelphia airport to bring it home. We took the zoo van and several more cars with staff and some Board of Directors members. Soon the Flying Tiger airplane landed at the cargo section, and we impatiently waited for the crate to be offloaded. The trip to the zoo was uneventful, and the crate was positioned at the entrance to the renovated exhibit. New wire fencing had been installed and included a wire-fence-covered roof. Most of us gathered around the sides but some brave souls climbed on top of the roof. Soon the tiger’s face appeared. After some hesitation, the tiger raced across the floor toward the side fencing. Momentum carried it up the sides, and it ran across the underside of the roof. Just about scared the pants off the men on top of the roof.

Best Birthday Ever

Hee hee, I had my birthday at the Zoo. All my freinds and family came. My mom, my sister and 3 of my friend walked with me to see the animals while my dad picked up the Ariel cake. When all my friends got there, the party began! First we all held turtles then me and 1 of my friends picked a one of the turtles and raced. Mine won. Then we all got pizza and cake. After we all got our face painted. After we all left but I got to say that was the best birthday ever!

Letter from zoo with picture and feather from Chelsea the Macaw

Chelsea the Macaw

I brought my now-wife to the zoo one day. We were there later, around 4:30, and there wasn’t anyone left in the zoo. There was a security guy walking around but that was it. We were up looking at the eagles when we heard “*brring brring* Hello?!” and we looked around and saw the security guard walking around down by the macaw cage, so we thought it was his walkie. But we went over to the macaw, Chelsea, and started saying hello to her. She started talking back, saying hello, wolf whistling, doing her head bob dance and sticking her feathers out. And then as we left we said bye bye and she yelled it back to us many times. From that day on, every time we went to the zoo we’d go up to Chelsea’s cage and say hello, and she’d come running out from the back to talk to us and show off. It was clear she knew who we were. One time, a newer keeper was sweeping the old goat enclosure next to Chelsea’s cage when we walked up and started talking to her. As we left and said bye bye and she started yelling it over and over, we heard the newer keeper turn to one of the veteran keepers and say “Did she just talk to them?! I’ve been working with her every day for over a month and she still won’t talk to me!” We thought we had a special bond with Chelsea and hearing that sealed it for us. We loved visting as often as we could, especially when we lived in Trolley, to see and talk to Chelsea. The summer we got married, we took a two month road trip, and didn’t get a chance to stop in and see her prior to that trip in the spring. When we got back from the trip, we eventually got to the zoo to see her. Unfortunately, at some point between when we last went and that visit, Chelsea had died. We were heartbroken and left the zoo crying as if we had lost our own pet. We had talked repeatedly about how excited we were to bring our future children to see and talk to Chelsea. It was really like losing a family pet. We wrote the zoo at the time to let them know how much she meant to us and how sad we were that she was gone, and they wrote us back and also sent a really lovely letter and a gift and framed it for us. We still come and visit multiple times a year, especially with our now 6 year old who loves to stop and see all the animals. We know there are bigger zoos around and we visit those as well, but Brandywine Zoo will always hold a place for us and our family.

From Zoo Camp to Now

When I was a child, I came to the Brandywine Zoo every year for their Zoo Camp. It was a magical experience that has left me an animal lover to this day. Now as an adult, I still find the beautiful joy of the Brandywine Zoo, whether it be from attending events like Valentine’s Day trivia night or strolling around the zoo itself!

Eagles & Bees

We were on a road trip to Delaware on July 4th when we became aware of a zoo nearby. As our family loves animals, we decided to check out the zoo. Although the zoo was small but it was unique in its own way. We saw exceptional animals like the red panda and the giant anteater which was truly amazing. The best part in the zoo was a bald eagle that was sitting exactly in front of the American flag! That too on July 4th! I also liked the bees exhibit, where we can look for the queen bee. There were snacks and refreshments that were in affordable prices. Overall, we had the best time here in the Brandywine Zoo.

Best Saturday Adventure

Going to the zoo with my friend in the mid-fifties was the best Saturday adventure. We would take the Arden bus down Marsh Road to Washington Street and get off before the bridge and walk down Monkey Hill. We often took our lunch and maybe a dollar to buy a drink and have a wonderful day out. Of course we loved the tiger and also we went to the monkey house. Our day ended with a walk into town, lunch at Eckerds, exploring Woolworths, and riding home with my father. We had such freedom in those days and the zoo was a wonderful part of our childhood. I have taken my grandchildren to the zoo many times and I’ve loved the changes that have been made. I love animals and watch every animal/zoo show on the TV. Maybe I should have been a zoo keeper! I’m sure the Brandywine Zoo is a big reason that I love animals now. Congratulations on your 120th anniversary.

Red Panda Love Affair from Infancy

Hi, my name is Elena, and when I was 2 months old, for my grandmas birthday, she took me to the zoo for the first time. She bought me an adorable red panda stuffed animal, which is what created my love for red pandas which I still have to this day (I still have that red panda toy)! Now I am eleven and visit Sherman and Scarlett every chance I get!

Red Panda Inspiration

I was working an event at the Bradywine Zoo a few months ago on a rainy day. I had been in a bad mood that morning, but I was at a booth next to the red pandas and seeing them immediately cheered me up. They are so cute and sleepy, I was so happy to be near them. Despite the rain that day, we had a wonderful time. I have since returned with my work and plan on going on my own as well. I love coming to the Brandywine zoo!

The Zoo Will Forever be a Part of Me

Quite a few years ago, until I was 3 years old, I lived on Wawasset Ave across from the Zoo. My grandfather pushed me in my stroller to the Zoo almost every day, I am now an ordained Animal Chaplain, and I know i got my great love and compassion for animals from that early exposure to them at the Brandywine Zoo. The pic attached is of me in what used to be called The Children’s Zoo where there were cement statues of bunnies. Oh, how I loved them. We eventually moved to Claymont but still visited the Zoo several times a year. I now live in Pennsylvania, and I still visit the Zoo to this day and follow on Facebook. It will forever be a part of me.

Well, I’ll Bee!

Hi! My four year old daughter and I visited the zoo for the first time earlier this spring. She absolutely loved the lemurs! We must have sat in the viewing area for about an hour, looking and talking about different species of lemurs. On the way out, we purchased a mama/baby femur stuffie to take home. We also loved the bees and learning how important they are to our lives.

Make My Day!

We stopped at the goat enclosure, one immediately came over to the fence. I spent a few minutes petting and talking to him. But when I tried to move on, he wouldn’t let me. He would inch closer, or walk along with me. Seems like I made a friend, and a pretty cool one at that. Eventually, a zoo keeper came by and got his attention. I said my goodbyes, but that goat made my day.

On the Road Again!

My boyfriend moved me back to Delaware for college in the late summer of 2024. With only a few short days before he flew home to Michigan, we searched for things to do. The Brandywine Zoo popped up and we made the drive from Dover. We loved the zoo and brought home to red panda plushies  roommates in February and my Dad in May. As I return to Dover once more for my senior year of college I look forward to more visits at Brandywine!

No Monkeys or People Were Harmed.

I was the director of Brandywine Zoo from 2013 through 2016. I had moved up to Delaware from North Carolina at the beginning of the year and then in the summer I headed back down to move my family up. I got a phone call early one morning from the vet tech Janey and all she said was “So gene, a tree fell on the monkey house” I thought she was calling to mess with me but no, a tree fell on the monkey house, literally and it was a very large tree! I rushed back up to Delaware but thankfully, the staff of the zoo and state park and it under control. But yes a giant oak tree (30,000 pounds give or take a pound or two) just fell over one morning, no wind, no storm, nothing and crushed the monkey house. Thankfully, no monkeys or people were harmed but it is an event of the likes I had not experienced prior or since. But I am grateful to all who responded on what was most certainly a memorable moment. It was a testament to the amazing people I had the opportunity to work with in Delaware. Brandywine Zoo will always hold a special place in my heart for the crazy moments, but more importantly, the amazing people and great little zoo.

An Endearing Note

As the Executive Director of the Delaware Zoological Society I take guest and member feedback and input very seriously. The information we receive helps us to make more informed decisions. And every now and again, I receive a letter from one of our young visitors, like this one from Kayla, who wanted to express her excitement about the birth of our baby crown lemur. Her congratulatory note was shared with zoo staff well as with Kip and Sophie (our proud crown lemur parents).

Generations of Amazements

Growing up in Delaware, the Brandywine Zoo was always a go to place. Now as a parent, I get the joy of taking my child! We had his first zoo trip with his grandparents from out of town, and it was such an awesome experience for everyone. From seeing a Bobcat curled up nice and cozy, petting the sweetest goats, admiring the sleeping Red Pandas, and getting to show my child.

Best Childhood Ever!

When I was young late 1970s as I’m now almost 57, Carrie Gantt my neighbor worked at the zoo and I was able to go in on summer weekends and work cleaning habitats and  feeding etc. Dr. Rosenberg was the head of zoo then I believe that was his name. I learned so much and had the best time. Best childhood ever!
