Job Description

A Zoo Camp Counselor will be working with our full time education staff to implement themed camp lesson plans for our camp programs for children ages 4-15. The Brandywine Zoo Camp offers children the chance to spend a week at the zoo learning about animals, zoos, and wildlife conservation. Each week is filled with Zoo visits, live animal presentations, crafts, animal-related games, songs, stories, and learning projects! A Zoo Camp Counselor will be responsible for the organization and management of these activities. This position will also mentor teen volunteers serving as camp assistants, as well as handling and presenting live animals to campers.

Job Duties:

  • Lead daily activities for summer camps.
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children aged 4-15.
  • Develop and implement hands-on activities, games, and crafts.
  • Follow our guidelines as outlined in our Zoo Camp Handbook for medical situations, behavior problems, and other camper situations.
  • Safely handle and present wild/exotic animals.
  • Keep camp space clean and organized
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Details:

  • $14 per hour
  • Monday-Friday (except for training days on June 1 and 8)
  • June 1, June 8, and the weeks of June 3, July 8, and August 5 are required.
  • 37.5 hours per week schedule for no less than 7 weeks, no more than 10 weeks, throughout the summer season
  • The first day of work is June 1st. The final day of work is flexible, and can be as late as Aug 23.
  • Generally, hours will be 8 am – 4 pm
  • Holidays (6/19, 7/4) may be required.

Conditions of Hire:

  • Must provide proof of negative tuberculosis test within the last 12 months before start date or be willing to undergo tuberculosis testing during training.
  • Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Delaware Zoological Society does not provide sponsorship for holders of H-1 B Visas

Experience Requirements:

  • At least 17 years of age.
  • Experience with a camp or education program for children or young adults preferred.
  • Knowledge of animals, zoos, wildlife conservation, zoology biology or other natural sciences preferred.
  • Knowledge of public speaking.
