Migratory Bird Day

SATURDAY, OCT. 11, 10AM-3PM

It's migration season for many of the birds with which we've shared spring and summer.

They are flying to destinations in Central and South America where food will be abundant as we experience winter here. To celebrate this fascinating feat, we have a Migratory Bird Day event.

This year’s theme “Shared Spaces: Building Bird-friendly Cities and Communities” emphasizes the importance of sustainable urban planning to protect habitats and create healthy ecosystems within our cities. Individuals and communities can take practical steps such as reducing light pollution, planting native vegetation, buying bird-friendly products, providing food sources, and treating windows to prevent bird strikes. Such a theme raises awareness about the many challenges migratory birds face due to human activities and expanding urban development, knowledge critical to our coexistence.

At the zoo, you will learn how to help with actions like window strike prevention, creating habitat, and cutting down on both light and plastic pollution while also visiting with experts in the field of bird conservation. Plus, have all your bird feeder questions answered by the owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Hockessin!
