The Delaware Zoological Society is currently seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and dynamic individual to join our fast-paced team as the Education Program Coordinator. This position is responsible for coordinating the delivery of Zoo Camps and Workshops, including Scout Workshops, Youth Workshops, and Adult Workshops, for the Education Department of the Brandywine Zoo. Duties include designing, developing, and implementing camps and workshops, camp and scouting special events, general program support for Education Department, aiding in the husbandry for the program animal collection, as well as supervision of day-to-day interns and volunteers. Drawing upon a positive outlook and team orientation, the successful candidate will lead our efforts to maintain, improve, and perfect conservation education at the Brandywine Zoo.

REPORTS TO: Curator of Education, Delaware Zoological Society

COMPENSATION: $12 to $14 per hour, based on experience

DETAILS: Full-time hourly position (37.5 hours per week) with benefits

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Direct supervision and management of:
    • Coordinate Zoo Camp, including summer camps, spring break camp, and holiday camps. This includes curriculum development, scheduling, staff and intern hiring and oversite, supply ordering, camper registration, and camp implementation.
    • Coordinate on-site workshops, including planning, developing, and marketing, for Boy and Girl Scout badge workshops, Scout Night Events, volunteer workshops, youth workshops and training, and adult workshops.
    • Additionally, supports other programming areas, as needed, including public programs, events, family and school programs.
    • Establishes and monitors revenue and expense budgets for camps and workshops programs, and provides regular reports as required. Directs staff activities to ensure satisfaction of financial goals. Works with DZS Executive Director on revenue management and online registration.
  • Develops and disseminates educational messages and programs that satisfy the Zoo’s educational, conservation, and financial goals.
  • Assist the Curator of Education and Assistant Curator of Education in designing, developing, and implement training, conservation education programs, education grants, and partnerships.
  • Works with the Curators, Marketing/Public Relations, and other principals to develop/manage community and educational partnerships.
  • Volunteers and Interns
    • Work with Delaware State Parks Volunteer and Assistant Curator of Education to train new volunteers and manage Education Department interns.
    • Onboarding and training of teen and adult volunteers, docents, and interns for the Education Department, as necessary.
  • Ambassador Animal Collection
    • Perform husbandry with and present for public programs the Zoo’s ambassador animals.
    • With Curator of Education, oversee program animal handling training for staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Maintains exceptional standards of customer service, cleanliness and physical appearance of all locations, staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and effective leadership and working relationships with all levels of DZS and BZ staff as well as diverse volunteers, donors, community partners, vendors and others.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Required:
    • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, such as Biology, Zoology, or Education, or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
    • Minimum of two years’ experience working with youth day camps
    • Minimum one-year experience at an AZA-accredited institution or similar facility or equivalent experience, including demonstrated ability to develop talent, deliver programs, and work with ambassador animals’ care and husbandry.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
    • Proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Access, software required.
    • Must have valid driver’s license.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds
    • Excellent time management, organization, and independent judgement skills. Proven ability to take responsibility and problem solve in a proactive manner,
  • Preferred:
    • Minimum one-year supervisory experience.
    • Budget-management experience and skills.
    • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) training a plus.
    • Experience with a camp management software (i.e. Camp Brain), volunteer management system (i.e. VolunteerMark or Volgisitcs), and Adobe (Form Central, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Brandywine Zoo is open to the public 364 days out of the year; therefore, all positions at Brandywine Zoo may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings. This work may require working outside for certain periods of time in variable weather conditions.

  • Must be able to work both weekend days regularly, as well as nights and holidays by assignment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: occasional lifting, bending and walking are a normal expectation.

  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
